This book embraces the recent information and innovative technologies related to Climate Smart Agriculture for sustaining crop productivity, improving soil health and lowering environmental foot-prints in intensive cereal systems in the backdrop of climate change effects in South Asia. It includes research findings, case studies and futuristic alternatives, covering different aspects of CSA by eminent scientists, teachers and academics, having outstanding expertise in their field of specialization. The chapters include new innovations and sciencebased evidences related to crop management, soil, water, nutrients, weeds, crop residues, sowing machinery, energy, problem soils, breeding, and new crop. This book will serve as a ready reference on Climate Smart Agriculture, and help strengthening the understanding for its utilization to develop climateready sustainable agri-food systems.

Dr. Madhu Choudhary is a Senior Scientist (Agril. Microbiology) at ICAR-Central Soil Salinity Research Institute, Karnal. She is mainly involved in assessing microbial (fungi and bacteria) functions and their diversity in conservation agriculture (CA) based management cereal systems of western Indo-Gangetic Plains of India (IGP). Also involved in mapping the soil enzymatic changes, microbial biomass C and N under varied input based CA systems. She is investigating the influence of different CA practices on soil flora and fauna (earthworms and arthropods, etc.) and their relationship with soil quality under different crops and cropping systems of IGP. She has published over 50 peer reviewed papers in leading scientific World Journals and imparting the trainings on same for capacity development of stakeholders.

Dr. Kailash Prajapat is a Senior Scientist (Agronomy) at ICAR-Central Soil Salinity Research Institute (CSSRI), Karnal. His significant research contribution includes development of pressmud based low cost sodic soil and water reclamation techniques, sodicity delineation for cultivars under sodic soils, foliar K fertilization for salinity stress mitigation in wheat under saline soil. He has identified the salt tolerant quinoa lines for Indian conditions and salinity tolerance strategies in quinoa. Presently, he is working on development of agronomic practices of quinoa, conservation agriculture-based rice- and maize-wheat systems to address the soil health, water productivity and sustainability issues of ricewheat system in the Indo-Gangetic Plains of India. He has published more than 35 research papers in leading scientific Journals.

Dr. Ram K. Fagodiya is a Senior Scientist (Env. Sciences) at ICAR-Central Soil Salinity Research Institute, Karnal, Haryana and has more than 9-years research experience. His research area is Conservation Agriculture (CA), Greenhouses Gas emission (GHG) and mitigation from agricultural soils. He obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Env. Sciences from Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. Dr. Fagodiya has published about 50 research papers and review articles in high impact national and international journals. He is a member of several professional societies and editor of scientific journals. He is a recipient of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), University Grant Commission (UGC), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi and Department of Science and Technology (DST), New Delhi, India.

Dr. Avni Dahiya is working as a Scientist (Agril. Biotechnology) at ICAR-Central Soil Salinity Research Institute, Karnal. She is currently engaged in deciphering the molecular basis of salt tolerance in crops using transcriptomics and systems biology approach and development of improved, salt-tolerant wheat cultivars through CRISPR/Cas genome editing. Additionally, she is investigating the soil microbial responses to soil amendments through metagenomic analysis. Her research also includes the physiological and molecular dissection of Root System Architecture (RSA) in wheat under salt stress, and assessing genetic diversity for salinity tolerance in linseed, chickpea, and sandalwood. She is a recipient of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the University Grant Commission (UGC), and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and has also qualified GATE.

Dr. S.K. Sanwal is a Principal Scientist & Head, Division of Crop Improvement, ICAR-Central Soil Salinity Research, Karnal. Presently, he is involved in development of salt tolerant materials of chickpea and different vegetables. His major achievement comprises of 14 varieties of different vegetable crops, includes eight in Okra, four in vegetable peas, one each in tomato and taro. The red bhindi-Kashi Lalima first of its kind was developed by him. He registered five genetic stocks in NBPGR for unique traits viz., triple and five poded and multiple disease resistant in pea, PS-35 of onion for salt tolerance and also identified salt tolerant lines of tomato and okra. In addition, he was involved in release and notification of two salt tolerant lentil varieties PDL-1 and PSL-9 in collaboration with IARI. He has published 85 peer reviewed research papers in national and international journals.

Dr. H.S. Jat is the Director of ICAR-Indian Institute of Maize Research (IIMR), Ludhiana. He has made outstanding contribution in developing and scaling of Conservation Agriculture (CA) based management technologies for predominant rice, maize and wheat agri-food systems in Indo-Gangetic Plains of India. He authenticated the system-based management practices which helps in producing more food from less inputs (water, nutrient and energy) while improving the agro-ecological resilience. He has published over 100 peer reviewed papers in leading scientific world Journals and bestowed with fellow of scientific national academic societies including NAAS and many national awards in the field of precise natural resource management for sustainable crop production.
