With a focus on empowering youth and bridging the gap between education and entrepreneurship, this volume serves as a roadmap for turning India's demographic dividend into inclusive economic growth, particularly in rural areas. It includes real-world success stories, data trends, and recommendations for building a resilient agri-ecosystem amid India's evolving workforce dynamics. A key impetus for this book is the stark reality of limited job opportunities in the organized sector. In India, the organized sector accounts for only about 7–10% of total employment, leaving the vast majority 90–93% in the unorganized sector, characterized by precarious work, lack of social security, and low productivity. This imbalance is particularly acute in agriculture, which employs around 45% of the workforce yet struggles with inefficiencies, climate vulnerabilities, and inadequate market access. The formal sector's slow expansion, coupled with skill mismatches among the youth, has led to elevated unemployment rates, especially in urban areas and among educated individuals. These constraints not only hinder economic progress but also exacerbate social issues, such as distress migration from rural to urban regions and the under-representation of women in the labour force, which has seen a concerning decline of about 44.5 million participants between 2020 and 2024. By focusing on self-employment and startups, this book seeks to highlight alternative avenues that can absorb this untapped potential and foster inclusive growth.

Dr. Shaurya Sharma completed her B.Sc. (Hons.) in Agriculture from CSKHPKV, Palampur (H.P.), M.Sc. and Ph.D. (Agriculture) in Economics from Sher- e- Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Jammu (J&K). She is an accomplished agricultural economist with significant academic and research contributions in the field of agricultural economics. Her research primarily focuses on basmati rice economics, agricultural marketing, crop economics, water conservation, and climate change adaptation in agriculture, with several research papers published in reputed journals, such as the Agro-Economist: An International Journal, The Journal of Community Mobilization and Sustainable Development, and The Journal of Experimental Agriculture International. She has also contributed multiple chapters to edited volumes covering emerging trends in agricultural economics, irrigation innovations, and agribusiness development. In addition to her scholarly publications, she has authored popular articles and actively participated in international and national conferences, workshops, faculty development programs, and professional training courses. Dr. Sharma is a recipient of the Best Master’s Thesis Award (2021) and the Best Ph.D. Thesis Award (2024), reflecting her academic excellence and commitment to impactful research in the agricultural sector.

Dr. J.P. Sharma, the former Vice-Chancellor of SKUAST-Jammu and SKUAST-Kashmir has demonstrated exceptional scientific leadership in research management, extension models, and entrepreneurship development for farmers' livelihood security. With over 122 research papers, 301 popular articles, 53 books authored/edited, and more than 50 awards, including being a NAAS Fellow, he has pioneered innovative approaches like the IARI-Post Office Linkage Extension Model, Cyber Extension, and Vice-Chancellor to Village programs. He has led 34 projects, established collaborations with national and international organizations, released 33 crop varieties, filed patents, and set up 58 startups. Dr. Sharma serves on numerous national bodies, including NEP-2020 Task Force, ICCR, and ICFRE, and has guided 23 PG students while introducing 11 post-graduate courses in agricultural extension.

Dr. Anshu completed her B.Sc. (Hons.) in Agriculture from D.A.V. University, Jalandhar, M.Sc. (Ag.) in Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry from Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Jammu, and her Ph.D. from Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya (CSKHPKV), Palampur (H.P.). She is a dedicated researcher in the field of soil science, with valuable contributions to soil microbiology and soil fertility. Her research primarily focused on rhizosphere-mediated nutrient management in rice, impact of long-term nutrient management practices on soil health and yield of maize and wheat with key findings published in peer-reviewed journals. In addition to her scholarly work, she has, authored 6 popular articles in Hindi and English, and contributed 3 book chapters to edited volumes on topics related to soil health, microbial interventions, and sustainable nutrient management in agriculture. She has also actively participated in international and national conferences, workshops, faculty development programs, and professional training courses. She is a recipient of Excellence in Research Award (2022), underscoring her commitment to advancing innovative and sustainable approaches to soil fertility and management in agricultural systems.
