Poultry farming is one of the major industrial activities in India. India having the positive position of third in egg production and fifth in broiler meat production. Poultry industry directly provides employment opportunities to three million peoples. Increase in one egg per person can provide employment generation to the extend of 50,000 person. Main success of the Poultry industry is the timely availabilities of the critical inputs along with quality and necessary marketing infrastructure. It is to be highlighted that the technological inputs is a critical factor for successful venture in any enterprise. Research and development in any field is a stronghold of the industry for future success. It is to be stressed that expansion of the enterprise is purely depends on the scientific input.
In this text book, special emphasis has been given in all about the alternate poultry farming system. Alternate or diversified poultry farming system has its own scope for vast expansion with much employment potential and income generation. Dr. D. Thyagarajan is a Professor of Poultry Science of Tamilnadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai for the past sixteen years. He is presently the Director of Distance Education, Madhavaram Milk Colony, TANUVAS. He is also looking after various continuing education programme in Directorate of Distance Education. He also served as Director, Centre for Animal Production Studies; Dean Fauculty of food science and Director of Research in TANUVAS. He is a recipient of Outstanding Extension Scientist Award from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi for the year 1996-1998. Besides being a distinguished teacher, research scientist and extension worker for the past 32 years, he has published over 103 technical papers/articles to his credit. He has also authoured/edited over 30 books. He has also been the Principal Investigator in several research and societal development projects funded by national agencies like ICAR, NADP, and DBT. He is a life member of several professional societies. He got best book award for Diseases of poultry. He is instrumental in starting number of academic programmes strengthen of Central Food Dairy Technology.
Dr. A. Ashok is a Assistant Professor of Poultry Science of Tamilnadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai. He has over 13 years of experience in teaching, research and extension activities. He is a recipient of senior fellowship in poultry science awarded by ICAR. He got first rank in M.V.Sc Poultry science in College of Veterinary Science, Hyderabad, APAU. He was also awarded the Ms. Venkateshwara Hatcheries gold medal for the best Ph.D. thesis in the field. He has published several technical papers/articles to his credit. He has also authoured/edited over 10 books. He is a life member of several professional societies.
Dr. G. Rajmanohar is at present working as Assitant Professor, Department of Poultry Science. He is actively engaged in the teaching. His field of specialisation is egg technology. He has published 18 scientific articles.
Dr. Murugan is serving as Associate Professor in Veterinary College and Research Institute at Tirunelvelli. His field of specialization is poultry nutrition. He has published 33 scientific articles.
