Horticultural crops have played a major role in ensuring livelihood security of farming community. The last decade has witnessed sea change in the production scenario of horticultural crops. Effective management of natural resources play important role in improving the productivity of horticultural crops in a sustainable manner. Practices genetic resource management, appropriate land use, maintaining soil fertility, efficient management of water resources, adoption of farming system approach for harnessing synergy between different components are some of the approaches on natural resource management for improving the productivity. A number of research work have been undertaken around the world on this aspect. It is time that the learning from the research in these areas to be translated into farmers field directly or after suitable refinement based on local scenario. In this book the authors have attempted to compile the available knowledge in these area including the findings of research work undertaken around the world. This book will be of immense importance for researchers in appraising themselves about the current status of research on different aspects of natural resource management in horticultural crops. It will also be useful for practitioners/farmers for adopting appropriate practices on natural resource management for improving income from their production system in a sustainable manner.

Dr Bikash Das is presently working as Senior Scientist (Horticulture) at ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region, Research Centre, Ranchi. He has 12 years of research experience in the field of development of fruit based production system through efficient utilization of natural resources in the tribal dominated area of eastern plateau and hill agroclimatic zone. He has also contributed significantly towards horticulture development in tribal dominated region of Jharkhand and West Bengal by providing technological backstopping to different stakeholders working on horticulture development in these states. He has published 41 research papers in different National and International journals and authored one book, 7 book chapters and six technical bulletins. He is recipient of Young Scientists Gold medal Award-2009 by Madhawi Shyam Educational Trust (MEST) and International Consortium of Contemporary Biologists (ICCB), Ranchi, (Jharkhand) for the outstanding contribution in field of Fruit Science. He has guided two Ph.D scholars and is life member of a number of professional societies.

Dr A.K. Singh is presently working as Principal Scientist (Horticulture) at ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region, Research Centre, Ranchi. He has more than 23 years of research experience in vegetable crops and has developed 18 varieties/F1 hybrids of different vegetable crops recommended for cultivation in different parts of the country. He has also contributed towards standardization of package of practices for important vegetable crops cultivated in hill & plateau reason of northern estern India. He has published 55 research papers in different International and National journals and has authored 4 book chapters and 34 technical bulletins/folders. He is recipient of a number of prestigious awards like Crop Research Award for outstanding contribution in the field of vegetable breeding during the year 2004 by Agriculture Research Information Centre, Hissar, 2000 Millennium Medal of Honour by the American Biographical Institute, Senior Scientists Gold Medal Award - 2009 by Madhawi Shyam Educational Trust and International Consortium of Contemporary Biologist , Ranchi for outstanding contribution in the field of vegetable breeding. He is Life member of a number of professional societies.

Dr Shivendra Kumar is presently working as Head, ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region. He has more than 33 years of research experience on integrated disease management of fruits and vegetable crops. Apart from his research work, he has contributed immensely towards development of horticulture in eastern region through his leadership in providing technological support and supply of seed and planting material to different stakeholders working on horticulture development in eastern India. He has published 25 research papers in different International and National journals and has authored two books and 7 book chapters. He is a Fellow of Indian Phytopathological Society, Past President of Chotanagpur Horticultural Society and has been the Member of different important national level Committees and Task Force.

Dr B.P. Bhatt is presently working as Director, ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region, Patna. He has more than 24 years of research experience in the field of Agro-forestry and Integrated Farming System. He has published 93 research papers in different International and National journals and authored/ edited 6 numbers of books, 38 numbers of book chapters, 12 technical bulletins, two training manuals. He is a Fellow, National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Natural Resources Management and is recipient of a number of prestigious awards including award for the outstanding contribution in “Forest (Silviculture) Research, for the year 1998-99” from Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education, Dehradun, “Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Award for the Biennium 2004-2005” from Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Govt. of India, New Delhi for the outstanding contribution on Intensive Integrated Farming System for Livelihood Security in NEH Region, Eminent Scientist Award- 2011 for outstanding research contributions for advancement of scientific knowledge in the field of agriculture, conferred in International Conference on Life Science Research for Rural and Agricultural Development, 27/12/2011, Bharat Jyoti Award- 2012 for research contribution in Food and Nutritional Security of resource poor farmers, conferred by India International Friendship Society, New Delhi. Six Ph.D. scholars have completed their Ph.D. under his guidance.
