Tamil Nadu produce on an average of 77.72 lakh tonnes of vegetables annually and stands first among all the states in the productivity of vegetables (30 t/ha). The major vegetables grown in the state are tomato, brinjal, bhendi, tapioca, onion, drumstick, watermelon, greens, hilly vegetables and gourds. TamilNadu occupies tenth position among the Onion producing states in India. Tamil Nadu produces an average 2.406 lakh MT of Onion annually. Over 34,679.10 MT of Onion worth Rs. 127.64 crore was exported from Tamil Nadu during 2017-18. About 35% of fruits and vegetables are lost in storage and transport due to lack of adequate cold chain and processing facilities. To reduce post-harvest losses with appropriate systems, to connect farmers with major market centres, processors and consumers and to convert surplus production into value added products, the supply Chain Management of Fruits and Vegetables needs to be developed. More infrastructure facilities need to be created and proper dissemination of latest and appropriate technology should be ensured through extension work. The creation of awareness among farmers and other stakeholders is to be given the prime importance. The book which will serve as a good guide for the economic and livelihood development of the farmers of Tamil Nadu by challenging the constraints in the marketing of vegetables.
